Biography

Barden, George O. 

 George O. Barden passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

He was born June 7, 1919 in Barton, N.Y., the son of J. Arthur Barden and Elizabeth Barden.

He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 as a medic and then on ship as a cook. After the service he worked for Creighton Grocery in Barton until taking over the business in 1962. He sold the store in 1982.

He worked for the United States Post office for a total of 43 years as a mail carrier, clerk and then postmaster, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the St. James Church, Barton Community Club (past president, honorary trustee), postmasters union. Service awards include: American Theater Service medal; European African Service Medal; Asiatic Pacific Medal; Philipine Liberation Medal; Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal; and Victory Medal.

He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Marian Barden; son Jim Barden; step son Cliff Harrower; and son-in-law Dick Walmsley.

He is survived by daughters Phyllis (Lee) Surber, Connie (Harry) Streck, and daughter-in-law Alice Middaugh; brother Fred (Virginia) Barden; sisters Catherine Barden and Dorothy Ridley; seven grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Dr. Ronald Kahn; Dr. Keith Nichols and staff; Johanna Moore, spiritual provider; Tioga County nurses and aides, especially Lorie and Ruth; granddaughters Penny Sindoni for daily care giving and Candy Likins.

The family will visit with friends and family on Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. with the Rosary being said at 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Blauvelt Funeral Home, Waverly and 10 a.m. at St. James Church. Memorials can be sent to the Jim Barden Memorial Fund at Tioga Central High School.
