Biography

Nelsen, Mildred W.

Mildred White Nelsen of 44 Ball Street, Waverly N.Y. passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Elderwood Nursing Home. Mildred was the wife of N. Palmer Nelsen, who survives. They were married for 65 years.

Mildred was born in Cold Water, New York on February 21, 1919, to Seneca and Lena Brown White. Early in her life her family moved to Waverly N.Y. where she grew up and graduated from High School in 1937. After graduating from Eastman School of Dental Hygiene in Rochester N.Y. she moved to Reading PA, and then to Philadelphia where she worked as a dental hygienist and met her future husband, Palmer. They were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1943 in Philadelphia. In 1950 Palmer and Mildred bought Hideaway Farm near Lowman. Some years after moving to Hideaway, Mildred continued her education at the State University of N.Y. at Cortland, receiving her teaching credentials, thus becoming qualif ied as a Dental Hygiene Teacher. She worked in that field in Waverly Central Schools until her retirement. They remained on the farm until 1990 when Palmer retired, and they moved to Waverly.

For several years she and Palmer participated in a modern western square dancing club, and after that, enjoyed participating in a senior bowling league. She was also active in both ladies and couples Bible study groups. Mildred and Palmer enjoyed many happy years of retirement during which they spent a number of winters in Florida and made several trips to visit family living in Denmark.

In addition to her husband, Mildred is survived by 3 children: Neil Jr. (Kathleen) of Canton PA, Sandra (Robert) Williams of Vestal NY, and Ronald (Diane) of Hideaway Farm, Lowman. There are, in addition, 5 grand children and 4 great grandchildren. Mildred was predeceased by her parents, her brother Howard, and sisters Helen and Wanita.

Mildred was a lifelong Methodist and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Waverly for many years.

The family wishes to extend its gratitude to Dr Sheela Prabhu, and the caring staff at both the Robert Packer Hospital and the Elderwood Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Facilities.

A memorial service to celebrate Mildred's life will be held on Tuesday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Waverly United Methodist with Pastor Ann Canfield officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 10:30 until the start of the service.

Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Glenwood Cemetery, Waverly, NY.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Blauvelt Funeral Home 625 Broad St., Waverly NY.
