Biography

Gressel, Albert M. 

 Albert M. Gressel, 86, of Waverly, NY left this world to join his loving wife, Dorris, of over 60 years, Friday night May 15, 2009 from Elderwood.

Al was born in Elmira, NY on May 30, 1922, the son of the late Otto M. and Anna Gressel. He was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy and was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army in a tank battalion while stationed in France and Germany. Upon completion of his military service he returned home to marry the love of his life the former Dorris A. Randall of Waverly, NY. He retired from Ingersoll Rand in Athens, PA after 38 years of service in the engineering department. In his spare time he hand lettered local fire trucks with gold leaf lettering. He was a proud donor of 15 gallons of blood to American Red Cross. He was a lifetime member and former treasurer of the Waverly VFW Post 8104. He was also a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Waverly, NY where he served on the vestry and as senior warden. His hobbies were golfing at local golf courses and working in his yard.

Al is survived by his daughters, Ardyth Gressel (John Enlow) of Sayre, PA, and Janet Gressel of Bath, NY. Granddaughters Christina Stires (Mark Ferguson) of Athens, PA and Jacqueline Stires (Matthew Schapp) of Jacobus, PA and a Great-Granddaughter Mackenzy Ferguson of Athens, PA. As well as numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews,

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife Dorris on March 7, 2007 as well as his two sons Christopher Robin and Eric Stephen Gressel. Sisters Evelyn Ward of Van Nuys, CA, Mary Lou Philbin of Elmira, NY and a brother Otto M. Gressel Jr of Bath, NY. His faithful companions Max, Mitzi and Mikey.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Waverly VFW Post 8104, 206 Broad St Waverly, NY, American Red Cross 139 Broad St Waverly, NY or the Bradford County Humane Shelter in Ulster, PA.

A time for gathering with family and friends will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009 and Wednesday, May 20, 2009 from 10-11 a.m. at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY. The celebration of Al's life will follow the visitation with Rev Benjamin Lee Lentz honoring his memory at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Chemung Cemetery, Chemung, NY.
